Hagia Sophia’s meaning comes from continuity and change. It has never been frozen in a single historical moment.
532–537
Emperor Justinian I commissioned the present building after the Nika revolt. Anthemios of Tralles and Isidore of Miletus designed an unprecedented monumental interior.
1453
After the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople, Hagia Sophia was converted into a mosque and gradually acquired minarets, a mihrab, minbar and structural reinforcements.
Twentieth century
The building functioned as a museum from the mid-1930s until 2020.
Since 2020
Hagia Sophia has again functioned as a mosque while remaining a globally significant protected heritage site within UNESCO’s Historic Areas of Istanbul.
