Hagia Sophia stands in Sultanahmet on Istanbul’s Historic Peninsula. Public transport is usually easier than driving into the old city.

T1 tram

Sultanahmet station on the T1 tram line is one of the closest public transport stops. From there, the monument is a short walk across the historic square.

Marmaray

From the Asian side, Marmaray to Sirkeci provides a useful connection. You can continue on foot through Gülhane or transfer toward Sultanahmet.

Walking from Eminönü or Sirkeci

Walking gives you a gradual introduction to the Historic Peninsula. Wear comfortable shoes and allow extra time in summer heat or peak crowds.

Driving

Traffic controls, pedestrian areas and limited parking make private cars less convenient for most visitors.
